Domaine de Montille is not only one of the greatest Domaines in Burgundy, but one of the greatest Domaines in France. The winemaking is traditional - partial destemming followed by a relatively long maceration period. The wines are aged in oak barriques (20-30% new) and are bottled unfiltered. These are wonderfully elegant, harmonious wines that require at least five years bottle ageing to show at their very best.
The 2017 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens Cuvée Hubert will demand some patience, as it is one of the most potentially long-lived wines in the de Montille cellar. Revealing aromas of ripe cherries, cassis and licorice that mingle with hints of black truffle, dark chocolate and rich soil, it's medium to full-bodied, ample but tight-knit, with tangy acids and fine but firm, chalky tannins. Powerful and broad shouldered, it's a classic Rugiens in the making. End of January 2019, the Wine Advocate by William Kelley Rating (91 - 93) +
